Care Home Services

Are you a care-home owner or manager? We want you to consider the benefits of changing from your current pharmacy supplier - to us.

Are you unhappy with the service from your current pharmacy? Are you looking for a more reliable service? Perhaps, you’re not considering a change, but feel still feel it is important to keep abreast of current market developments? Either way, you’ll want to weigh up the benefits against any risks, before deciding if change is right.

Unfortunately, there are few choices available to care-homes these days when it comes to selecting a pharmacy. This is because the pharmacy sector itself is dominated by only three big multiple groups. Of the remaining small number of independent pharmacies, there is an even smaller fraction, who have the capacity or ‘know how’ to deal with the every-day needs of a modern care-home. Thankfully, we are proud that we fall into this latter category.

Myth – “Only a big-brand pharmacy multiple could have the resources and skills to provide a proper care-home service.”

Historically, senior managers of big care-home groups have recommended that their local managers go to one of the pharmacy multiples to provide medication. After all, national care groups think ‘nationally’ – an independent pharmacy around the corner would never appear on their radar.  Inevitably, this corporate inflexibility means that some of their homes may miss out on some local opportunities.  Services are one thing, but being “on your wavelength” is quite another.  We think that big brands are simply just that - big on marketing.

We expect the multiples to be cutting back on their costs very soon, and this may impact upon their service to you.

Why? In England, the government NHS pharmacy cuts are very significant indeed, and it will eat into pharmacy profits. Thankfully, the cuts are not being applied directly to Welsh pharmacies, but the same multiple groups you see in Wales largely dominate in England - where their head offices are also based. So it is hard to imagine a future where they will be investing in their service provision to you, or respond more readily to any problems you may be having. Conversely, because we are local, independent and not subject to any cuts, we are increasing our investment and capacity to care homes.  For example, Saturday deliveries are now routine, and we now offer new technologies that might benefit you, (see eMAR below for example). Please contact us to find out more.

Consider this; has your current provider ever offered you all the different ‘medicine systems’ - discussing the benefits and risks of each - so you can make the right choice for your home? Probably not. We do not have a ‘one size fits all’ approach. For example, we can provide you with either Boots style MDS blister sheets, Biodose (http://www.biodose.co.uk), Nomad systems - whichever works best for you. We are currently looking at different electronic MAR systems, and we think that Omnicell (http://www.omnicell.co.uk/emar) is probably one of the easiest to use.

Does your current pharmacy provider offer three vans willing to deliver at the drop of a hat? Emergency-supplies of medication to care homes are a fact of life, and is not a problem for us. We are happy to deliver to a home several times a day if necessary.

Does your current provider guarantee deliveries on Saturdays? Time wasted by your staff on trips to the pharmacy is a cost you could probably do without. We deliver your medicines to you at agreed times to suit the needs of your home.

Does  your current pharmacy save your staff precious time by “booking in” the monthly medicines with you? We’ll send a member of staff with the medicines and MAR sheets to ‘book them in’ – sometimes our pharmacist will do it with you.

Does your current provider sit-down with you at least twice a year to review your MAR sheets, with the aim of improving the pharmaceutical care to your individual service users, while helping you reduce as many of your own risks as possible?

When it comes to a more ‘personal’ and professional care-home service, we will not be beaten.  Caring for our care-home customers is more to us than just MAR sheets and daily deliveries. There are no limits in our efforts to support you. Whether it’s about sourcing hard-to-get medicines, or making those routine daily calls to doctor’s surgeries to chase up prescriptions. Yes, we actually do these things for you (rather than the other way around)! We are passionate about pharmacy, and we know that if we save your staff time, we are also saving you money. Futhermore, we’d like you to contact our existing care-home customers, to find out for yourself.

  • Because we are independent, we are flexible not “off the shelf” like the multiples, and we provide our services with a ‘personal touch’.
  • We can provide you with Boots MDS, Biodose, Electronic MAR’s – whichever works best for you.
  • We can offer your staff either certified training, individual competency training or just general training about medicines – whatever training you need.
  • With three delivery vans we offer deliveries even on Saturdays, saving you time and money. No other pharmacy offers this.
  • A dedicated independent owner who listens
  • An exclusive phone line and point of contact that won’t change over time.

Communication

You will have at least one named person here on a dedicated telephone number who will get to know your Care Home very well. They will provide support and guidance to your Care Home team as well as making sure the pharmacy staff are aware of any changes in your needs.

Pharmacist advice

We’re open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. We’ll provide speedy advice, whatever the issue. And our care home visits are not just a ‘box-ticking’ exercise either. We understand the pharmacy needs of your service users, and are on your wavelength with regards to the ‘administration risks’ that your staff take day after day. By regularly risk-assessing and literally fine-tuning every patients MAR sheet we will reduce some of the risks as well as improve the pharmaceutical care that you provide. Furthermore, we provide certified staff training and can even work with you to devise robust standard operating procedures for the medicines administration, if you require it.

Pharmacist clinical reviews are also a ‘must.’ I will help you identify the high risk medication and high-risk drug combinations to watch out for.

We know all care staff need support in identifying these priority groups.

Peace of mind
